Asheville-Weaverville Speedway started in 1950 as a half-mile dirt oval that a reformed bootlegger carved out of his own farm near Weaverville, NC. Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Rex White and Fireball Roberts all won there before the paved half-mile ran its last race in 1969 and closed for good in 1970. The land became a high school. Some of NASCAR's earliest proving ground now sits under classrooms and a parking lot.
