Metrolina Speedway

Charlotte, North Carolina  ·  Closed · track still standing

Metrolina Speedway sat on the fairgrounds in northeast Charlotte, a half-mile of clay that ran Friday nights while Ralph Earnhardt and most of the Carolinas came to beat on each other. It got paved for a stretch in the 1970s to chase NASCAR money, and Dale Earnhardt won his first race on pavement there before the promoters gave up and put the dirt back. The gates are shut and a FedEx building sits next door, but the track is still out there, the last old Charlotte speedway left standing. Race City forgot one of its own.
