Speedway Park was a half-mile of Jacksonville dirt with two turns, splintered wood grandstands and enough potholes to stop a race while somebody filled them. On December 1, 1963, Wendell Scott beat Buck Baker there and became the first Black driver to win a NASCAR Grand National race. They waved the flag at Baker first, then a scoring review found Scott had won it by two laps, and Scott went home that night without the trophy. The track closed in 1973 and there is an apartment complex on it now. Some ground deserves a marker.
