Columbia Speedway in Cayce, South Carolina ran NASCAR's top division from 1951 to 1971, a half-mile of red clay they called the track too fast to handle. David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Junior Johnson and Fireball Roberts all turned laps in that dust. The Cup cars left in 1971 and the gates closed for good in 1975, but volunteers have since clawed the old oval back from the weeds. Some ghosts are worth keeping.
