Starkey Speedway

Roanoke County, Virginia  ·  1950–1971

Starkey Speedway sat on 30 acres outside Roanoke, a quarter-mile with seats for 4,000 and a promoter who would book anything. Circus elephants one week, Grand National cars the next. Junior Johnson won the last NASCAR race there in August 1964 and took home $850, with Ned Jarrett second and Glen Wood third, three future Hall of Famers on one quarter-mile. The owners offered to spend half a million turning it into a half-mile if NASCAR would commit to two dates. NASCAR said no and went to the cities. There are soccer goals and ball diamonds on it now.
