Raleigh Speedway

Raleigh, North Carolina  ·  Closed 1958 · demolished 1967

Raleigh Speedway turned on the lights before anybody else. The one-mile oval hosted NASCAR's first superspeedway race under the lights in 1953 and ran its final three Grand National events on the Fourth of July, 1956 through 1958. Noise complaints from the neighbors shut it down, bulldozers finished the job in 1967, and a track that should be a shrine now sits mostly buried under the city. Some history deserved a better ending.
