They called it the Toughest Short Track in the South, and for six decades Southside Speedway earned every word of it. The little bullring outside Richmond opened in 1959 and put Junior Johnson, Jim Paschal, and Ned Jarrett in Victory Lane during its Cup days, then spent forty more years turning local kids into racers, a young Denny Hamlin among them. It went dark in 2020 and sat silent. A revival group now has county approval and is working to fire the place back up. Some tracks are just too stubborn to stay dead.
