They called it the Indianapolis of the West, and for one decade it might have been the most ambitious racetrack ever built in America. Ontario Motor Speedway opened outside Los Angeles in 1970 as the only facility on earth designed to host all four major sanctioning bodies, NASCAR, Indy cars, Formula 1, and the dragsters, all on one enormous complex. It hosted the Cup season finale through the 1970s, and in 1979 Richard Petty clinched his record seventh championship there by eleven points over Darrell Waltrip. Then the money ran out. By the end of 1980 the biggest, newest superspeedway in the country was sold off and bulldozed for a business park. It lasted ten years and left a hole nothing ever filled.
