Islip Speedway was a fifth-mile of asphalt on Long Island, the smallest track NASCAR's Grand National division ever ran. Richard Petty won the last Cup race there in 1971, then NASCAR cut every race under 250 miles and never came back. The little joint also birthed the demolition derby in 1958 and put it on ABC's Wide World of Sports. The gates closed in 1984, and the bullring that punched way above its weight became just another Long Island memory.
