Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron ran NASCAR's Grand National stars from 1966 to 1971, and Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and Bobby Isaac all found victory lane on its half-mile. The wildest chapter came in 1967, when federal agents uncovered a full moonshine still hidden in a cave under turn three, reached by a trap door in a ticket booth and rigged to run 80 gallons a day. A track built on stock car racing, sitting right on top of the very thing that started it. The gates closed for good in the 1980s.
