They called Lakewood Speedway the "Indianapolis of the South," a flat one-mile dirt oval carved around a lake at the Atlanta fairgrounds. Barney Oldfield and Ralph DePalma raced there in 1917, the NASCAR Grand National boys tore it up through the 1950s, and that murky infield pond swallowed more than one car that got loose in the corners. Atlanta International Raceway stole its thunder in 1960 and the gates finally closed in 1979. One of the great cathedrals of Southern racing, and most fans have never heard the name.
