Beltsville Speedway

Laurel, Maryland  ·  Ten Cup races, 1965–1970

The suburbs grew out to meet Beltsville Speedway and then complained about the noise. The Maryland half-mile ran ten Cup races between 1965 and 1970, with Ned Jarrett, Tiny Lund, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and Richard Petty among the winners, and it raced on weekly for eight more years after NASCAR left. By the last year the county was monitoring the races, a sound wall stood around the place, cars had to run mufflers, and in 1978 it closed for good, leaving the ground to the university that owns it today.
