Before Talladega, before Daytona got fast, there was a one-mile dirt oval carved out of an old horse farm in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Occoneechee Speedway ran from 1948 to 1968, one of just two tracks from NASCAR's inaugural 1949 season, and the only dirt track from that first year still standing today. Junior Johnson and Curtis Turner slid through those corners, Richard Petty took the final checkered there in 1968, and now it's a quiet wooded trail you can walk.
