Soldier Field

Chicago, Illinois  ·  One Cup race, July 1956

NASCAR once paved a half-mile oval inside a football stadium and ran a points race on it. Soldier Field, July 1956, 14,402 people on the Chicago lakefront watching Fireball Roberts take the lead with six laps left and win by a car length. It was the only Cup race the place ever held, and NASCAR was gone from the city for the next sixty-seven years.
